Three Comma Rules to Rule Them All
Confused about comma use? Check this out.
As a writing professor, I receive a lot of free grammar handbooks. Most of these, enumerate the rules of comma usage to a degree that even I find daunting. Most list at least eight rules. Several list over ten. One contains twenty-four rules for proper comma usage.
Today, I will set the record straight for the weary student. In my opinion, one needs only three rules to rule [almost] all commas.
Rule One: Lists
It is no secret that commas separate items in a list.
I eat raw oysters, blanched squid, and seared salmon.
The only challenge comes from that final comma, known to experts as the Oxford comma and made famous by Vampire Weekend’s song by that name. The song begins, “who gives a fuck about the Oxford comma?” The answer is: I do. And although it is not required, I believe that omitting the Oxford comma shows a lack…

How do I get more followers on my blog?
Wonderful advice on how to make your blog successful.
Why are some blogs more successful than others? Where do they get all their followers, page views and visitors? Why do some wonderful writers have so few followers, while others with less well written blogs have so many?
Most new bloggers will google this endlessly, (probably second only to “how can I make money from my blog?). The number one answer they will read is “write good content”.
Well listen up new bloggers. That’s not strictly true.
Content is not what makes a successful blog, although it will make you more successful than others. No, in my opinion what makes a successful blog is the many different things a blogger does before pressing publish, and the efforts they make afterwards “off blog” to promote their post.
What do I mean?
Well firstly imagine you have written a post. Does it have a catchy title, feature photos, and begin with a…

Working on “Finding a Balance”
Please read through this post. There is an opportunity for you to help by making a donation or by becoming an organ donor.
Baydreamer Writes ~ Lauren Scott, Author
Dear Friends,
I am embarking on a new adventure and this is an introduction. My second poetry book, “Finding a Balance” is almost ready for publication and it’s nice to not be such a novice the second time around. This book isn’t just about sharing more poems I have written. It’s not only about me. It holds a deeper meaning; the new adventure part. The proceeds will be donated to an organization for a purpose close to my heart and my family’s. I’ll begin, though, with a back story…
Part I:
After three years of abdominal pain and ongoing tests, on October 4, 2012, our daughter, Stephanie, was diagnosed with Primary Schlerosing Cholangitis (PSC). She was 21 years old. Her doctor was the head of the Gastroenterology department and was extremely competent. He didn’t beat around the bush. He told us this wasn’t good. Below is a brief description:
Primary…

Chris The Story Reading Ape's Blog
I never planned to write a book – it was more a case of a great story finding me, but more about that later. I’m a native of Adelaide, South Australia, coincidentally the hometown of the fugitive extraordinaire at the centre of my bizarre but true tale.
Just a bit about me, because lets face it, if author’s lives were that interesting we’d all be writing autobiographies. My early schooling was refreshingly unorthodox. My mother was the governess on an outback sheep station in New South Wales. I’d sit beside her in an old barn and listen in to the lessons she broadcast through a primitive wireless to hundreds of other kids on the outlying properties. After that it took me a while to get used to the more formal education of English boarding schools. Later I spent a couple of years with my family in Singapore before going to…

Help a fellow author
Please help Savannah Grace, an indie author.
Savannah Grace, author of the Sihpromatum series, has written two books so far. They are travel memoirs from the perspective of a teenage girl.
First of all, if you haven’t read them, please do. They are great books. And she is a lovely person too.
Second, we need your help. You may have heard that Mark Zuckerberg announced a book club. It is concentrating on learning about other cultures. He has also asked for suggestions. I have suggested Savannah’s books. Please either like my comment here. Or add your own comment in the thread. Let’s call attention to an indie author who has written some great books.
Third, reblog this and spread the word.
THANK YOU!!!
Saturday Showcase – The Light
Here is another beautiful poem by dear friend Morgan over at BooknVolume.
I Bear with me a Beautiful Light,
Forever Lit,
Forever Bright.
Shining onto my Darkened Way,
Leading me Onward,
Day by Day.
When the Winds begin to blow,
When I Stumble,
When I don’t know,
My Light grows Stronger in the Gloom
Protecting me
from Impending Doom.
When I meet Strangers along my Way
Who have stopped walking,
Unsure and Afraid,
I Lift my Light so we both can See,
And We walk Together
In its Luminosity
This Season of Perpetual Light
Guiding through the Misery,
When Darkness Chills,
Freezing out Love’s Frivolity,
Remember The Light Shining Within,
A Gift For You, A Gift for Me.

New Year’s Resolutions Get a Bad Rap
“So perhaps instead of New Year’s resolutions, we need to have daily resolutions.” That is an idea with a lot of promise.
New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap.
That’s probably because they have the life span of a gnat. Usually.
It takes a tremendous amount of will-power and discipline to stick with something beyond a “honeymoon” two-week period following the excitement of the holidays.
Some of you can feel the stares from your spouse already. Or the whispers. Looks like she’s fallen off the wagon early this year, he might say to himself when he sees you down a whole cheesecake on January 6. In your defense, it did have fruit on top, so that’s something.
But just because a good habit is stopped doesn’t mean it was a bad idea in the first place. Far from it. Good habits are always good ideas. A list of personal improvements or goals is an excellent way to take inventory of your life.
The point all of us making resolutions have to remember…
