WHAT IT TAKES

By Terry Tyler

What It Takes by Terry TylerBook Blurb:

A tale of three sisters…

Karen Kavanagh has spent her life feeling like the runt of the family.

Her two elder sisters, domestic goddess Ava and salon owner Saskia, are mini versions of their mother, a gorgeous Danish beauty. Karen has inherited her father’s droopy, dull brown hair and long nose – pitted against two Scandinavian sauna babes, she feels like Cinderella in reverse.

Danny Alvarez doesn’t see her like that. He thinks she’s wonderful.
Lots of women want Danny, but Danny just wants Karen.
He pursues her with the devotion of a stalker – but she pushes him away. Then she realizes what she’s done…

Set in Norfolk, Terry Tyler’s sixth novel, “What It Takes”, is a story of insecurity, jealousy, sibling rivalry, love and loss, and the games people play in the search for love – because if you love someone with all your heart you’ll do what it takes to make them yours…

About the Author:

Terry lives in the north of England with her husband, and has published ten books on Amazon. Readers say she has created her own genre, which lies somewhere in the area of contemporary drama and romantic suspense, with the occasional bit of rock fiction and mystery thrown in.

LAST CHILD is her latest release; this is the sequel to Kings and Queens, both of which are modern day parallels of events that took place during the Tudor era of history. Terry is now at work on a third ‘history revisted’ novel, this time based on the women behind the Wars of the Roses.

My Review:

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started reading WHAT IT TAKES. The first part of the book was devoted mainly to introducing the characters, of which there were quite a few.  I almost lost interest here, as it was somewhat tedious, but I am thrilled that I continued to read the book.  When the author dove into the story, there was magic in her words.  The words flew by, and before I realized it, I had finished the book.  I was not ready.  Even though everyone involved seemed to resolve his/her own character conflict, I wanted more.

I think most people can relate to Karen at one point or another of their lives.  She lacked confidence; she always felt she came up on the short end of the stick.  Her sisters were gorgeous, whereas she felt she was more of a plain Jane.  Karen’s perception was that everyone else got the best of everything in life and in love.

Then there is Danny Alvarez.  Danny had good looks, but was that enough for Karen?  He seemed less refined.

I give WHAT IT TAKES 4 stars because of the slow start.  In the end, the story won me over.  I would definitely recommend this book.

Book Blurb

The Staircase on Pine Street is a story that will touch your heart with its tenderness, humor, sensitivity and page-turning narrative. Mariana Llanos has once again, crafted a beautiful story of family love to share with readers of all ages. Ten-year-old Lilly has to learn to live with her grandfather’s diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. Lilly and Grandpa Leo have a close, loving bond but ever since he’s been diagnosed, things have drastically changed. Alzheimer’s is taking away her grandpa’s memory. Lilly feels that there is nothing she can do to help. Until one day, Grandpa Leo gives Lilly an important assignment: to find a long-forgotten treasure. Lilly— with the help of her best friend, Mei Ling— goes on an exciting quest where she discovers more than she could have ever imagine.

My Review

Ten-year-old Lilly’s grandfather has Alzheimer’s disease. He is moving to an apartment in an assisted living facility where he can get help every day.  Lilly is excited that it has a playground and she and Grandpa Leo can go to when she visits.  She doesn’t understand what Alzheimer’s is, but her mother helps her understand the stages of the disease as her grandpa goes through them.  Lilly realizes that her grandpa no longer remembers everything, and some days he doesn’t seem to know who she is. Then one day her grandpa gives her a mission – she is to search for a forgotten treasure.

Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be scary for young children, but Mariana Llanos has woven a beautiful story that explains the disease in a way that young children can understand.  I recommend parents read the forward before reading the book to their children. In this short piece about Alzheimer’s disease, the author describes what Alzheimer’s is, tells how to get more information, and makes suggestions to help families to create awareness of this devastating disease.

I recommend this upper elementary school age child, whether or not they have a family member who has Alzheimer’s disease.

Spare Change By Bette Lee Crosby

Spare Change
Ethan Allen Doyle had a tough life. His mother was so wrapped up in herself, and his father had a mean streak. He had more on his plate than any eleven-year-old should ever have, and then, he witnessed a brutal murder. Fearing for his life, he takes off in search of his grandfather, known only to him by the Christmas cards he received.
Olivia Westerly is settled into her single life when she meets Charlie Doyle, who sweeps her off her feet. Her married life quickly takes a turn to the unexpected, and Olivia was forced into a situation that causes her to re-evaluate her life. Through various events, the most important of which is having the care of Ethan Allen forced upon her, she finds all of her preconceived notions of the kind of person she is, are no longer applicable.
SPARE CHANGE is a murder mystery. The storyline drew me in quickly with its superstitions, mystery, romance, friendship, humor, and its flawed characters that are so realistic that every reader can find them believable. The story moves quickly and is told from several different points of view. It’s about how we deal with life’s challenges and the power of love in changing who we are.
When I first started reading SPARE CHANGE, I thought I wouldn’t like it very much, but once into a few pages, I was captivated by the story, the writing style, the author’s voice, and the characters. I am amazed that so much emotion, mystery, and story is found in just 280 pages. It is a book I heartily recommend to all readers in every genre. I look forward to reading more of Bette Lee Crosby’s work.
According to Amazon, SPARE CHANGE is their number one bestselling historical mystery and the winner of five literary awards.

Fun With Family!

I apologize for the recent lack of reviews, but that will be rectified shortly.  Meanwhile, I will give you a glimpse into the fun my husband and I had with our oldest son and his family.

Last week we drove to Boston. It was a long, but particularly enjoyable ride. We took I-90, which is a toll road through Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts.  Toll roads are definitely the way to go.  There was some semi-truck traffic, but not nearly as many as we encountered on regular interstate highways.

It is always exciting to visit our grandsons (and yes, of course, their parents too), and we always pick up where we left off the last visit, as if no time intervened.

Our first day there we took the train into Boston to meet our son for dinner.  While we were waiting, our oldest grandson found a new friend.

Another day we walked the freedom trail. It was fascinating. We saw Paul Revere’s grave, house, and the North Church. Faneuil Hall, Boston Common, the Old Statehouse, the USS Constitution, Boston Massacre Site are among some of the fascinating stops on the tour.

Like all visits, time flew by so quickly.  We had a wonderful time laughing, talking, and exploring together.  It was, as always, difficult to say ‘till next time.’

On the way home, we stopped at Niagara Falls and stayed on the Canadian side of the falls.  It was the first time we’d been back in nearly twenty years. The surrounding area has changed tremendously, but the falls remain the same awe-inspiring, powerful, and immensely beautiful spectacle as ever.

Ignoring Gravity by Sandra Danby

Ignoring Gravity by Sandra DanbyRose and Lily are sisters. Rose has always looked after her younger sister, and as an adult she feels responsible for Lily’s happiness. Lily is married and has always wanted a baby, but is unable to conceive.  Her husband is disinterested and tells her to start working on it. Meanwhile, Rose is given a new assignment to report on early menopause. She soon starts wondering if this might be Lily’s problem.

After their mother’s death, the sisters sort through her belongings and boxes in the attic to spare their bereaved father the sad task. While going through a box Rose discovers that, unbeknownst to the family, their mother kept diaries. While flipping through them, Rose learns that she is adopted. She is crushed. Her life is turned topsy-turvy as she questions who she is, who her birth parents are, why she was never told.  She feels as though she is on the outside of her family and is unsure if she truly belongs and whether or not Lily is her sister.  Why did her parents lie to her all these years?  Using the investigative skills she honed as a journalist, Rose sets out to discover her true identity.

One thing leads to another, and Rose and Lily have more issues to settle, but I will leave that to you to determine.

There is a lot going on in Ignoring Gravity to keep the reader’s attention.  Character development is excellent with highly believable characters.  The writing is superb, very smooth, and holds your attention throughout the book.

Did I like Ignoring Gravity?  I loved it!  I recommend it to everyone who enjoys an excellent book.

Sandra Danby Author - photo Simon CooperAuthor bio: Since she can first remember, Sandra Danby has loved reading. Hardback, paperback, e-book, new or pre-loved, borrowed from the library and friends, magazines and newspapers, she reads them all. She grew up on a small dairy farm at the bleak edge of East Yorkshire where England meets the North Sea. At the age of four she was making magazines full of her own stories. When missed by her mother, she was usually found in a corner with her nose in a book. She devoured everything from the Famous Five and Secret Seven to Swallows and Amazons, from Little Women to George Orwell and Mary Stewart. All this reading led her first to a degree in English Literature in London, then to journalism. Now she writes fiction full-time… and still reads at every spare moment.

The next book: Sandra is now writing Connectedness, the sequel in which Rose Haldane travels from Yorkshire to Malaga, Spain, in pursuit of the birth child of controversial artist Justine tree.

My Mr. Manny by Jennifer Garcia

My Mr Manny by Jennifer Garcia

Mia is a single mother raising her daughter on her own while juggling a full time job and housework. Mia’s sister convinces Mia she needs a manny (male nanny) for her daughter Lucia, and she had the perfect one in mind. Dominic!

Though I felt Dominic was too perfect, he was an immensely likeable character and was a perfect fit for Mia. While they both are recovering from disastrous relationships, they unexpectedly find what they are looking for in a relationship with each other. The story is about commitment, moving on, and becoming a family.

If you are looking for a light, fast-paced romance novel to read, Jennifer Garcia’s MY MR. MANNY is the book for you. It is well written with excellent attention to details and vivid descriptions. I highly recommend this book.
