I originally posted this a year ago, but it recently came up again in my classroom and thought it might be timely to post again. I asked my students how many of them have been in a moving car while someone was texting? 39/52 said they were. Wow! How incredible it is that parents value their children so little. You think that comment is too harsh, well it isn’t. Texting and driving is 17 times more dangerous than driving drunk at the legal limit. 17 times!!!! That’s crazy. The post below will give you the particulars. I told my students that they should grab the phone and throw it out the window. After all, a broken phone is much better than a dead child. Here we go:

  2. Thanks for sharing this, Michelle. We’ve talked to our kids many times about the dangers of texting and driving and as far as we know, they don’t do it. We don’t do it either and will pull to the side if there’s an emergency. I see people looking down at their cells on the freeway all the time and I wonder how they can concentrate going 65+ miles an hour and still text or do whatever they’re doing on their cells. It’s frightening, to say the least. With every new invention or convenience comes the negatives and losing a life is as negative as can be. Hugs!

    1. I know what you mean. I see it everyday and it scares me the number of times I’ve seen someone swerve out of their lane because they weren’t paying attention to driving. Hugs back to you.

  3. These irresponsible idiots drive me mad! As a pedestrian you have to think for them as well as yourself when it comes to crossing roads and they throw a tantrum if you take them to task about their stupidity. I’ve seen people riding push bikes with no hands down the middle of the road whilst texting no hands on the bike at all and absorbed in texting! ! If a car came round the other way they’d have no chance whatsoever. Crazy!

  4. I can’t tell you how many lorry drivers I see on their phones and texting, it’s frightening. I even saw one with a book open on the steering wheel! The police should be concentrating on catching these dangerous drivers instead of going after people who are doing a couple of miles over the speed limit.

    1. Cathy, I saw a man brushing his teeth while driving, and a young girl putting on her mascara. Another time I saw someone with a newspaper spread out over the steering wheel.

  5. Unbelievable! I don’t own a cell phone, but my boys do and both of them ignore the phone while driving. If they or my husband answer while driving I yell at them. This last weekend the Mythbusters did a show on distracted driving and it showed that even just talking on the phone, hands free, was as big a distraction as holding the phone to your ear. I don’t even like people to talk to me while I drive and they’re in the car. I need to be in the zone – concentrating on driving!

    1. I agree, Yolanda. There are just too many distractions with phones, texts, email. I’ve even heard of people watching movies on their phones while driving.
